How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT (AEO 2026)

How to get my business recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini: a practical AEO guide — entity clarity, answer-first pages, citations and crawlers.

How do you get your business recommended by ChatGPT? You make it easy for AI systems to find, understand and trust you: a clearly defined business entity with consistent details everywhere, pages that answer customer questions directly, mentions on sources those systems already cite, and a site their crawlers can read. There is no paid placement — this is answer engine optimization (AEO), and it builds on solid SEO rather than replacing it.

Here is the process we use at Racool Studio, step by step, including how to measure results without buying another tool.

How answer engines pick which businesses to name

When someone asks “best physiotherapy clinic in Baku” or “web design agency in Mountain View”, an AI assistant typically does two things:

  1. Retrieves. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews run live searches against web indexes and fetch a handful of pages. If you are not in the index, or the page is slow or blocked, you are not in the candidate set.
  2. Synthesises. The model reads those sources and composes an answer, naming businesses that the sources describe clearly and consistently — and that it already “knows” from training data.

So an AI recommendation is a blend of three signals: retrievability (can it fetch your pages?), clarity (can it extract who you are, what you do, where, for whom?) and corroboration (do independent sources say the same thing?). Most businesses that never get mentioned fail on corroboration: their own website is the only place that describes them.

AEO vs SEO: what changes and what stays the same

Classic SEO AEO (answer engine optimization)
Goal Rank a page in the list of blue links Be quoted or named inside the answer
Unit of competition The page The fact, the paragraph, the entity
Still essential Crawlability, speed, internal links, backlinks All of the same — AI search retrieves from indexes
New emphasis Keywords and page authority Answer-first writing, FAQs, structured data, consistent entity data, third-party mentions
Measurement Rankings, clicks Mentions and citations across a fixed prompt set, AI referral traffic

Google itself says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practices: the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet (Google Search Central). That is the right mental model — AEO is SEO done for a reader that quotes you.

Is SEO dead because of AI search? No — but its payoff is changing. For many informational questions, the user now gets the answer without clicking, so raw traffic from “what is…” queries can fall even while your visibility grows. What remains valuable is being the source that gets named when the question is commercial: “who should I hire”, “which product fits my case”, “what does it cost”. Those mentions send fewer but far better-qualified visitors, and they often show up as branded searches and direct visits rather than as a click from the answer itself. That is why AEO results should be judged on leads and mentions, not on sessions alone.

Step 1: make your entity unambiguous (name, address, schema, consistent profiles)

AI systems think in entities: a business with a name, a category, a location, founders, services and relationships. If your name, address or description differs across the web, the model’s picture of you gets blurry and it will prefer a competitor it is sure about.

  • One canonical name and description. Write a one-sentence definition (“X is a physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic in Baku offering…”) and reuse it on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press mentions.
  • Consistent NAP. Name, address, phone — identical everywhere, including map services used in your market.
  • Organization / LocalBusiness schema on the site, with sameAs links to your official profiles, plus Service, Product, FAQPage and Person markup where relevant.
  • An About page that states facts: founding year, founder, location, what you do and do not do, notable results you can prove.

Our own product Rastock AI is a good illustration: it is described the same way everywhere — an AI SaaS that generates stock-agency metadata and delivers files to 10+ agencies, with 900+ creators and 1M+ files processed, accepted into Microsoft for Startups, NVIDIA Inception and AWS Activate. Consistent, verifiable facts are exactly what models repeat.

Step 2: write answer-first pages with FAQs and clear facts

Models lift the paragraph that answers the question best. Write so that paragraph is yours.

  • Answer in the first two sentences. Then explain. (This article does it.)
  • One question per section, phrased the way customers ask it: “How much does…”, “Which is better…”, “Do you work with…”.
  • Concrete facts over adjectives: prices or ranges, timelines, service areas, languages, specifications, who it is for and who it is not for.
  • FAQ blocks on service and product pages, marked up with FAQ schema.
  • Comparison and pricing pages. “X vs Y” and “how much does X cost” are among the most common AI prompts. Pages like our website cost guide exist precisely to be the source an assistant quotes.
  • Tables and lists for anything that is naturally structured — they are easy to extract.

Step 3: earn citations on sources AI models already trust

This is the step most businesses skip, and it is often the one that moves the needle. Look at which domains appear in the citations when you ask AI tools about your category — then get onto those.

  • Directories and review platforms relevant to your industry and country.
  • “Best X in Y” listicles that already rank; many accept submissions or updates.
  • Industry associations, partner pages, startup programs, event and award listings.
  • Community answers: genuine, helpful participation on Reddit, Quora or niche forums, where your business is mentioned in context.
  • Local and trade press: a real story (new product, expansion, a useful dataset) beats a paid press release.
  • Your own case studies, written so a third party could summarise them accurately.

Step 4: technical access (crawlers, llms.txt, fast static HTML)

If the crawler cannot read the page, nothing else matters.

  • Allow the search crawlers in robots.txt. OpenAI documents separate bots: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search results, GPTBot for model training, and ChatGPT-User for user-initiated fetches (OpenAI crawler docs). You can block training and still allow search. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Check that your CDN or firewall is not silently blocking them.
  • Server-rendered or static HTML. Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript the way Google does. If your content only appears after client-side rendering, it may be invisible.
  • Speed and clean markup. Fast pages, semantic headings, descriptive alt text.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console. Bing’s index powers Microsoft Copilot and is used by other AI products, so submit your sitemap there too (IndexNow helps with fast updates).
  • llms.txt. A proposed convention for a plain-text map of your most important pages for language models. It is not an official standard, and no major engine has confirmed ranking on it — but it takes an hour to add and does no harm.

How to measure AI visibility without paid tools

  1. Build a fixed prompt set of 15–30 questions your customers really ask: category + location, “best X for Y”, comparisons, pricing questions.
  2. Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (for AI Overviews), in a logged-out or fresh session. Record in a spreadsheet: mentioned yes/no, position, which sources were cited, what was said about you — and whether it was accurate.
  3. Track AI referral traffic in GA4. Create a segment for referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT often appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to outbound links.
  4. Watch branded search in Search Console. People who hear your name in an AI answer frequently Google you next.
  5. Log changes you made that month so you can connect cause and effect.

Checklist you can run this week

  • Write your one-sentence entity description and make it identical on site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and key directories.
  • Add Organization/LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links; add FAQ schema to top service pages.
  • Rewrite the opening of your five most important pages to answer the main question in two sentences.
  • Publish one pricing or comparison page for your core service.
  • Check robots.txt and firewall rules for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot.
  • Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap.
  • Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about your category; list the domains they cite and pick three to get onto.
  • Set up the prompt-tracking sheet and the GA4 AI-referral segment.

Frequently asked

01 Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There is no paid placement in organic AI answers. Visibility comes from being a clearly defined entity with consistent information, answer-ready content and citations on sources the models use.

02 Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO builds on SEO. Crawlability, speed and authority still matter, but AEO adds answer-first formatting, structured data, entity consistency and presence on third-party sources that AI systems quote.

03 How long does AEO take to show results?

Search-backed engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews can reflect changes within weeks of pages being indexed; answers drawn from model memory change more slowly. Track a fixed set of prompts monthly.

04 Is SEO dead because of AI search?

No. AI search engines retrieve pages from web indexes before they answer, so pages that are not crawlable, indexed and trusted rarely get cited. SEO is the foundation; AEO is the layer that makes your content easy to quote.
